Today’s hike up Bishop Peak felt like one of those small but meaningful wins—the kind that reminds you why you lace up your boots in the first place.
Bishop Peak offers a trail that’s not too long but definitely earns your respect. The path is moderately steep, with sections of rocky terrain that keep you engaged and just challenged enough to feel accomplished without being overwhelmed. It’s the kind of hike that meets you where you are—perfect for a training day, a quick outdoor reset, or even a first introduction to the trails of the Central Coast.
As I continue exploring this region, I’ve been intentionally seeking out hikes that help me get a feel for the landscape—and honestly, for myself too following foot surgery. Bishop Peak checked both boxes. It gave me a chance to test my balance, adjust to the terrain, and simply be present in a new environment.
There was also something a little more personal about this one. I felt oddly drawn to it before even arriving—maybe because of the name. Coming from a hometown of Bishop, it felt like a quiet, symbolic connection. Standing at the peak, looking out over the rolling hills and coastal views, it was hard not to reflect on how far I’ve come, both geographically and personally.
And a quick gear note—because it made a difference: I wore my new Anetik sun hoody on the hike and absolutely loved it. Lightweight, breathable, and perfect for sun exposure on those open sections of trail, it kept me comfortable the entire time without overheating. I am in awe of this hoody, the arms and torso length are actually long enough, the hood offers adequate coverage, and it felt light and airy and soft throughout the hike.
One of the best parts of the hike, though, was the energy on the trail. There were plenty of other hikers out enjoying the day, and it felt like everyone was in the same good mood—smiling, offering friendly hellos, and sharing that unspoken appreciation for being outside. It added to the experience in a simple but meaningful way.
This trail is a great option if you're new to the area or just easing back into rocky terrain. It’s approachable, rewarding, and doesn’t demand an entire day. You get the climb, the views, and the sense of accomplishment—all in a manageable package.
I’ll definitely be back, maybe to push the pace next time or just to take it all in again.
Adding some photos below to capture the trail, the climb, and the views that made it all worth it.
Have you hiked Bishop Peak or explored other trails in SLO County? I’d love to hear your recommendations as I continue discovering the Central Coast.
